Academic impact of COVID-19 - March 2020 to June 2021
Teaching and learning at Westborough High School during the COVID-19 Pandemic was designed to provide high quality instruction, rigorous independent learning opportunities, and social-emotional support to account for the safety and wellbeing of students. Our policies and procedures recognized that access to and capacity for success was variable for all students throughout the pandemic.
2019-2020 School Year
• WHS used a system of remote learning between March 13 and June 17. Our transition was aided by our district’s previous successful experience with remote teaching and learning through state-approved Alternative Learning Days designed to replace snow days.
• Final grades on transcripts are only based on the in-person portion of the school year.
• Between April 27 and the end of the school year, students who earned at least an 80% for their remote learning could earn a High Pass (HP). Students may choose to submit an Optional HP Report with their counselor recommendation for college applications.
• It should not be inferred that students performed poorly during remote learning if they do not submit the HP report.
2020-2021 School Year
• “Hybrid” students received two days per week of in-person instruction and comprehensive asynchronous remote learning on home days.
• “Remote Learning Program” students participated in a combination of daily synchronous instruction from WHS teachers, asynchronous VHS classes, and independent learning.
• WHS began to provide in-person teaching and learning five days a week for students choosing to attend school in person on April 26.
• Transcripts do not distinguish between programs and grades for the 20-21 school year are displayed and weighted uniformly.
While the COVID-19 Pandemic was a shared journey, individual circumstances shaped our students’ experiences and emotions throughout a year-plus like no other. Every student has a unique context and should be considered as an individual as well as a member of the Westborough Community.
